Inter-RAT

With continuous evolution of wireless technologies and existing access technologies (e.i. HSPA+, EDGE), Focus is on multi mode mobile platforms which can operate in all the existing access technologies including LTE, HSPA+, HSDPA, HSUPA, EDGE etc. So that people can maintain continuous mobile broadband connection when they move in and out of different kind of network coverage. Here comes the Inter-RAT procedures into picture.

Different geographies have different network coverage and network providers. Inter-RAT procedures are nothing but the set of rules to maintain connectivity when UE ( or say mobile user) changes it's geography and enters into a location which is having a different radio access.
